Should you build your next website in WordPress or Shopify?
If you’re planning a new website, there’s a good chance you’ve already come across the WordPress versus Shopify debate.
Both platforms are excellent.
But they’re designed to solve different problems, so the right choice usually comes down to what you actually need your website to do.
The best platform isn’t the one your web agency happens to prefer.
It’s the one that makes the most sense for your business.
WordPress is incredibly flexible.
WordPress is a good option when your website needs to do more than sell products.
It’s particularly well suited to service businesses, professional firms, agencies, consultants, charities and organisations with a lot of content.
You can build the website around your business rather than trying to fit your business into a predefined structure.
That can be particularly useful when you have complex services, multiple audiences, large project portfolios, team profiles, resources, news or other types of content that need their own structure.
A well built WordPress website can also give your team a highly tailored CMS, making it easier to manage the content you actually use.
Shopify is built around e-commerce.
Shopify is a natural choice if selling products is the main job of your website.
Products, collections, payments, checkout, customer accounts, orders and inventory are all built around the platform.
It gives you a strong foundation for running an online shop without having to build the entire e-commerce system yourself.
It’s also much more flexible from a design perspective than some people assume.
You can create a completely custom visual experience rather than simply picking a template and changing a few colours.
If you’re building an online shop, Shopify is often the obvious place to start.

What about SEO?
This is one of the questions we get asked most often.
The answer is that both WordPress and Shopify can perform well in search.
SEO isn’t simply about choosing the right platform.
It comes down to how the website is structured, how useful the content is, how well the technical side has been handled, how quickly the site loads and how easy it is for search engines to understand and navigate.
The same applies to AI search.
Choosing WordPress or Shopify isn’t going to automatically make your website more visible in AI tools.
The quality and structure of the website still matter.
So which one should you choose?
A simple starting point is to look at what your website actually needs to do.
If your website is primarily about your services, expertise, projects, people and content, WordPress is likely to be the better fit.
If you’re primarily selling physical or digital products online, Shopify is likely to make more sense.
There are exceptions, of course.
Some businesses need a content heavy WordPress website alongside a separate e-commerce platform. Others have more unusual requirements that change the decision completely.
That’s why we don’t start a project by choosing the platform.
We start by understanding the business.

Don’t let the platform dictate the website.
It’s easy to get caught up in the WordPress versus Shopify debate.
But the platform should come after the requirements, not before them.
Work out what your customers need to do.
Work out what your team needs to manage.
Think about your content, your products, your marketing and where you expect the business to go next.
Then choose the platform that gives you the best foundation for all of that.
The best website platform is the one that gets out of the way and lets your business do what it needs to do.
